Lionel cranes are a little out of my budget right now. Has anyone else used another brand? Specifically, I want a claw crane. I was wondering if there was a cheaper substitute out there. I've found hook ones out there for $30 with remote but none with a claw. Anybody have something? Thanks, jeff

I had a Lionel magnet crane that works good. I took off the magnet and I purchased a AF Clam Bucket that has the solenoid on it to work the bucket, soldered it on and works great. When I want to change just unsolder and resolder you are back in business. I got a real good price on the magnet gantry that I couldn't resist, and always wanted the bucket.
My Lionel gantry crane has TMCC remote control and has a hook and magnet, but no claw. It was well over $150 new. I would love to see what you found for $30. I also have been intrigued by the older Lionel intermodal cranes, but those are hard to find and pricey.
Have you thought about building one? Maybe you could use a crane from a crane car mounted to an upside down basket? You could paint the basket whatever metal color you want. Also, maybe look for old Tonka cranes or third party knock-offs. Maybe you could find a claw on ebay as a part and add it to the crane with the hook? Just some ideas... Would love to see what you come up with!

There is a 1/45 scale, remote control construction crane with a claw on eBay. Here is the eBay item number:262710982666. Maybe you could mount this to a gantry platform?
George, that's the one I found but I "think" I found it cheaper. I'm not sure if it has the claw though.
Lionel made a bucket type gantry crane in the early 2000s,it picks up things like coal, will post pics later today.

Looks like the right size. Are you going to put it on a gantry type platform?
No. I think I'll keep them mobile. I think it will be fun to drive around layout scooping logs and coal.. Cheaper and more play value from what I see. May turn out to be a dud.,.time will tell.
