This is a great topic! I've adapted a number of different trailers to ride on the Lionel scale-size 40' flatcars that used to be sold by AHM. I find these look better than longer cars on my small layout. I also built my own trailer hitches from styrene.

The side-door trailers are from New Ray. As you can see in the third pic, I trimmed the frames to reduce the gap above the wheels. The other ones here are from K-line and/or MTH. I have some of those K-mart "Champs of the Road" trailers too. I wish those didn't have reefer housings on the front.

I like your custom two-trailer car. How was it made?

Thanks,

Alan P

Alan,  Our local ACE Hardware store charges one dollar ($1) per cut on plastic stock.  I take my plastic to them and have them cut the 'floor' at 2 1/4" for the entire piece.  I can either bring those pieces home to be cut on a miter box or have ACE cut to a specific length.  Length depends on length of trailer (s).  I use modelers wood for the side rub rails and a 3/8 x 3/8 piece on the underside for lengthwise strength.  Drill two holes for the bolts to hold the trucks/couplers.  I have cardstock with wood pattern on one side for the deck and am waiting to see if Midge at MTH can find their hitch stands.  John

Six Atlas 45' Santa Fe trailers purchased from Norm's arrived today.  Photo shows a K-Mart trailer on a K-Line flat car, an Atlas Santa Fe reefer on an MTH piggyback flat car which left the factory with two pup trailers (hitch in original position) and the CF Weaver trailer on Weaver piggyback flat car.

The Atlas trailer's doors open, the tandem axles may be placed in any of four positions, two landing gear assemblies are furnished [raised and lowered] which are changed by pulling one of them out [wiggle the left leg, wiggle the right leg].  The king pin is rather large and is fitted into a rectangle slot and twisted.  Like many Atlas parts, I used sandpaper to make it narrower and shorter.
