Have had all my engines stored for the past 12 years, and in process of starting a layout now. What advice would be helpful for preparing Lionel,MTH,TMCC/Proto sound engines before running them? Don't want to fry any boards or anything..

For the Lionels, mainly a lubrication is in order...that is all... For protosound locos a battery charging is in order, and a lubrication.
I would replace any batteries on general principals.
Old batteries can leak and will not hold a charge.
Look for rust or other storage damage too.
Rubber and plastic can fail and melt or dry out on on wires and tires.
Critters can also find a home inside the trains.
Electronic parts can also fail do to age or poor storage.
Prepare for the worst and hope for the best outcome.
