I have this little siding that goes to my coal area that I was originally going to use to stage coal cars. I have had a change of mind and now I am thinking of making it a steam service area. I want to put a over the track coal loader( like the one pictured) and a water tower. Problem is I don't have a lot of room on either side. Was there ever a prototypical water tower that was used that was over the track. If so if anyone has a pic that would be great.

Another option is to install a water tower with no spout. Then put trackside "plugs" where steam locomotives can take on water.

Reading fan, What do you mean by "plugs"? Is that something that was used in reality?

Here's a photo of a water spout that they filled tenders with. Not sure of the correct name "water column"? They can fit in a small area.
