I have a black MTH steamer with 2 problems

1) a vertical handrail snapped when I backed the loco through a curve (it caught on the tender). Unfortunately it sheared flush with the loco. I will dig at it with a needle as soon as my new "progressive lens" glasses arrive this week. WOO HOO! can't believe what I couldn't see. Any thoughts on:

a) getting it out

b) replacement wire. I'm sure I can copy the shape and paint it black. I will check the thickness with a micrometer.

2) One of the drive wheels rubs on a rod. Or the other way around. I took it apart, bent the rod a bit and I don't think it rubs anymore. However, when I repaint the wheel, I'd really like to add a thin shim. I'm not going to try to adjust the wheel, it runs fine. Has anyone done this? Do you have a source, thickness recommendation?

Thanks
