Don't know if this is the right forum, but a question to all the kitbashers.

In regards to the coal bits that are used in the hoppers, accessories, etc., is it possible to paint them a different color, and if so, what type of paint should be used so that it doesn't come right back off during use or makes the bits get stuck in the machinery?

I'm looking at using the Lionel 97 Coal Elevator as a working loader in a FEC limestone rock quarry on my future layout. For that to work, I'll need to have the coal bits be cream and white colored.

Also, I know that the 397 Coal Loader and 456 Coal Ramp have been historically mated to each other.  Can the 97 Coal Elevator be jerryrigged to work with the 456 Coal Ramp?

Thanks

I don't know where you live, but here in northeast Pa, I have access to crushed limestone that is used for making white mortar. I use it for making crushed limestone loads. I get it at a brick and stone supply yard. Before I got the sand, I made my own by crushing chunks of limestone which achieved the same results, but a little labor intensive, even though limestone is relatively soft.

How much are you looking for? I can mail you a small bag that would fit in a mailing envelope for the cost of shipping if you can't find what you're looking for elsewhere.
