I know, it may be a sacriledge in terms of value. But, I have some "not especially valuable" F3's in operation that I would love to have with silver trucks rather than the black. Has anyone done that, and if so, what is the best type of paint to use?

I used Floquil Old Silver applied with a paint brush. Testor's silver in a spray can will most likely give you cleaner, faster results.
I use Testors Silver and a small brush and just take my time. I've painted the trucks on about five diesels locos including several new legacy locos and two more that were silver but not silver enough. Value is not as important to me as how good they look afterward.
Thanks, guys. I appreciate the advice. I remember using Testors silver about 40 years ago on some HO models. Nice to see that some things haven't changed.

By the way, when using a brush I do not disassemble or even mask the loco - I just make sure not to get the paint anywhere I shouldn't. Never had a problem.
I use Aervoe engine enamel in a spray can. I heat the can under hot water from the tap, and paint the parts in the sunlight outdoors. Engine enamel lays on nice and smooth. But you have to either take the truck apart, or sometimes on the ones that are staked together, I mask with tape and Saran wrap.
