Hello All:
Does anyone know the location of the whistle on the 7 P&LE Berkshires?  I have the MTH Premier model of this engine and it is not visible on the engine.  Due to NYC's tight line clearances the P&LE Berk's design possessed a boiler similar to that of the S class Niagara with everything either recessed or very low profile.  I contacted Glacier Park Models, who produced a very fine HO scale model of this engine, and their contact did not know the location of the whistle either.  A video, offered by Herron Rail and available to view on You Tube, shows one of the A-2a's whistling for a grade crossing (fireman's side is visible to the viewer).  Steam is seen coming up over the boiler on the engineer's side near the cab front and drifting across the boiler towards the fireman's side.  This would suggest that the whistle might have been under the running board in the firebox area on the engineer's side.  Pictures available in Jack Polaritz's book on this engine do not give any indication as to where it might have been.  Someone had suggested that it may have been under the boiler near the frames but, in my opinion, that location would have compromised the effectiveness of the whistle.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Hello,

The whistle appears to be located on the fireman's side of the boiler.  It is roughly 6 feet in front of the cab high up on the boiler (right above the front wheel of the trailing truck).  One cannot see the actual whistle itself due to the fact that it has an enclosure (shroud) surrounding it.

Thanks Steve; I viewed the Herron Rail You Tube video again and the whistle exhaust is moving from the exact location you stated on the fireman's side right above the trailing truck's front axle and drifting over the boiler to the other side.  On page 60 of Jack Polaritz's book a fairly clear picture of that exact area confirms it.  Thanks so much.  My MTH model has some sort of apparatus in that location although it does not resemble a whistle.  Thanks again!
