I was wondering if anyone knows the part number of the 4 terminal optical device used in the PS2 3V kit speed sensor? I would order the complete circuit board with sensor from MTH but as a last resort figuring it would be many times the cost of the sensor alone if I knew what they used. The actual MTH part number for the mini board would help also if I have to go that route. TIA

Here's the part variations for the tach board and the number for the sensor.  Note that the sensor is obsolete, and I don't find sources for them.

Tach Reader board (no spacer)AG-0000033for Mabuchi motor w/ 30mm flywheel
Tach Reader board (1.5 mm spacer)AG-0000047for Mabuchi motor w/ 27mm flywheel
Tach Reader board (2.2 mm spacer)AG-0000041for Pr Steam with 30 mm flywheel
Tach Reader board (no spacer w/ resistor)AG-0000048for LocoSound board in tender 30mm
Tach Reader board (1.5 mm spacer w/ resistor)AG-0000054for LocoSound board in tender 27mm
Tach Reader board (no spacer) with hole in pcbAG-0000058for RK L-3 Mabuchi w/ 30mm flywheel

So everyone is right.  The sensor itself has 4 conductors, but only three conductors connect the board on which it is mounted to the PS2 system.  It's a matter of perspective.

When I was upgrading my older locos, I bought a variety or sensors on boards with varying spacers.

Not really, he was very clear in asking about the 4 terminal optical device on the sensor, and explained he did not want to order the entire sensor.  G

I think I am going to try these.

It appears the spacer might have to be a bit thicker but the rest of the parameters are pretty close. Always good to have options.

Won't work with out re-orientation.  I did try one.  Not worth the effort.  Go look at the pin out between the 2, they are different.

The reason for 4 legs is 2 are 5VDC in, PCB ground for the LED, and output for sensor.   G

AG-33 obsolete replaced by AG-58.

Missing AG-83 .5mm spacing

no spacer comes in diesel, and there is an equivalent SMD device used.

1.5mm spacer comes with Steam kit.  G

G, thanks. It was late and I planned to check the pinout today. Have you found a replacement? I am thinking if the original part is obsolete then it won't be long before MTH is out of stock.

I could mount the Fairchild one on Vector board and reorient the wires but like you say its hardly worth the effort other than to not have to deal with MTH which is rarely a smooth process for me.

Pete, I have them in stock and MTH had the AG-78 also.  I think they and their factory did the last buy out as they went obsolete.  Not really an issue as PS-3 uses a different sensor.  They have continued to produce them in kits and have them as spares, and there is an SMD version used for the non spacer version.

The price difference is minimal, and your time is more valuable.  I do rebuild them, but it is a pain.  Remove old, clear holes, refit new, and solder.  Too much heat and damaged sensor.  SO, for a one time thing why try to save a $1.  MTH price for sensor is $6, whole assembly $7.  While if you can get the component for less it is worth while, in this case you really can't.

You can make the QRE work, but have to mount reversed and solder wires different.  Tried one and it work, but never bought any more.   G

Your comment added nothing, George.  I was not the only one who sought clarification---see above posts.

Please read his initial post and than ask your self what part of his question you answered....if you want to talk about your comment adding nothing ?  G

Pete,

I saw this the other day an I have some speed sensors when I had my shop before I became totally disabled as a Vet.

OK Digi-Key EE-SY124 , what is interesting it is the same compact sensor TAS used, I stumbled across that. If you still need one let me know.
