Passenger car dilemma

Despite the current (and IMO temporary) surge in demand and prices, I suggest not worrying about future value or ability to find a buyer.  However, if you decide to sell, now is probably a good time, although those cars aren't high-dollar items.

Since passenger cars are usually run as a unit, I'm not sure that new trucks and couplers are worth it unless you really don't like the appearance.  Those cars aren't scale anyway, so a coupler upgrade won't accomplish much.  If the couplers are coming apart while running, you can probably use zip ties to hold them shut.  And those cars are already lighted, so not sure why you'd want to add rollers.

Bottom line (IMO) is to like them as they are, or sell and buy something that's more to your liking.   

Unfortunately there is rarely appreciation in any train once it is purchased so I never particularly worry about value before modifying.  I'd ask the following questions:

1. How much do you like the set you have?
2. Are you planning making further modifications to it?
3. What is the real cost difference between a new set of cars versus upgrading?
4. Do you have time for the project?

In my case, if I am really happy with a car I will modify it.  If I can replace it with something I like better I take route.  The financial side for me is not quite as important as the end product.  You may not find a big difference in cost anyway.  However 9 trucks is a lot to track down.

Just thinking about modernizing some of my rolling stock and engines. Got my 1st three coaches from my dad's collection when he passed and then spent years searching e-bay for  what I believe to be the complete set. Takes up a lot of track on my layout. Will just have to keep the diner car next to the engine as it's the only car with a operating coupler. As all my engines are conventional, may just invest in something more up to date to pull them.
