I've been friends with both the husband and wife that have been friends with my mother who own a popular deli. The husband also has a very exceptional collection of O gauge trains. He's a collector, so most of the collection is in original boxes. It's mostly modern era Lionel and MTH, but I found in a dusty cabinet some postwar treasures. That included a 622 switcher, a 2330 GG-1, and a 2368 Baltimore & Ohio F-3. I really want the B&O unit, but I don't know how much is fair to pay him for it. Since he stopped collecting years ago, he doesn't seem to be aware of what trains he has, but I want to be fair. The 2368 is dusty, has no box, inserts, paperwork or even the B-unit, BUT as far as I examined the A unit is original.

The B&O has always been one of my favorites as well. Your best guide will be to place a 'watch' for B&O F3 on eBay and look at them for a week or two. Although clean examples can still command a hefty asking price, with all the re-issues and clones by Williams (a beautiful example) and others, the price of a good 2368 has come way down. You should be able to locate a matching B unit after a while too but consider your costs having to deal with several sellers.
Try asking what the folks want for the A unit first and play it by ear from there.
I would say $200, a decent pair only brings about $400-500, a mint boxed unit or set is another story. The b-unit must be harder to find and a b-unit box alone will bring $400 or more.
Original A unit only in exc condition with no box - $250 - $300. A dealer would try to take it for $75.
Same condition with B unit and boxes and liners $1200+. Ten years ago it would have been $1800 to $2200. The master carton alone in exc condition can easily sell these days for $1200+

I'm with bigo426 and 400e on this. Considering the condition [no box, and only the one piece], $200 to $250 would be a fair price for it. Don't go by ebay here. Sure you can tell them that you can get one on ebay for x amount, but that is horse trading. In this case you are dealing with freinds of family. You don't want to take advantage of their not knowing it true value. Get your deal of the year somewhere's else.
