I have a question about PRR passenger car paint schemes and I can't find much of anything online so I thought someone on here might have some information on this topic.

I'm modeling the PRR and NYC from about 1942-1944 and I'm wondering which passenger cars had olive trucks and when they transitioned from olive to black.

This is my understanding so far: what I've read is from the 1920s to 1939 the r50b cars had olive green trucks and boxcar red roofs. In '39 they painted the roofs black. Starting in '43 they painted the underframes and trucks tuscan red and in 1945 the underframes and trucks were painted black and stayed black until the '60s. I know select trains had passenger cars with olive underframes and trucks and the mp54 converted passenger cars had olive trucks and underframes. I also know its pretty hard to tell because of only having black and white photos to work with.

My questions are did all of the PRR's passenger cars have olive trucks and underframes until 1943? And if not all which ones did? Also is it true that the underframes and trucks of r50b's were painted tuscan in 1943? Did they do this to other cars as well?

This is from the book "Pennsylvania Passenger Car Painting and Lettering" published by the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical and Historical Society (PRRT&HS).

There are a few charts for different types of passenger equipment.    These charts are set up from 1930 to 1968 and each  year is a block about 1/4 inch square.    so I can't say the exact month for any given change.    Also as far as I know, these are based on the official painting instructions for shops to use.    Most cars did not get repainted  until it was necessary for other shopping, and then only part of the car painting may have been implemented which would have created mixed paint schemes.    So older paint schemes could have lasted a long time after the instructions were issued.

Trucks and underneath equipment were "Olive" until about end of 1st quarter 1943.     Note 56 says  this includes battery boxes, water tanks, and AC equipment - ie whole underside.

Then for maybe a year, it is listed as Tuscan.

Then "Truck Green" for another  year until mid 1945.

Then Black until the end of Pennsy in 1968

The roofs were "metallic Brown"   until about mid 1940.    Then car cement  until the beginning of 1943 which was said to be dull black, and then black after that.    So this coincides with the "olive trucks".

Handholds and iron work was Black the whole time.

The R50bs were considered passenger equipment, so I would think the same painting instructions apply.   They are not called out specifically in the charts.

I have also seen someplace, the green color specified as "Apple Green"
