I always love the weekly photo fun threads, but why are some posters/repliers so compelled to repeat anothers set of Photos?  One set is sufficient.  I don't think we need to see of download the same photo five times in a single thread.  Can this be programatically surpressed by the forum?  Or better yet, can we all just be a bit more courteous when quoting in our replies?  This shouldn't be that hard.

Thanks in advance,

It's the same people who forward an email and you get every persons email address that it ever has been sent to. I can see the pictures, no need to have them posted 5 or 6 times. Why even bring this up again because the culprits will just keep on doing it no matter how many times we bring this up.

While I agree and understand your frustrations, I don't mind the "repeat photos" all that much.  As Harry said, it's perfectly necessary when you're trying to refer to something specific and want to ask the author how he or she did such an effect etc.

My pet peeve is the postings in Weekend Photo Fun that have nothing to do with trains, or layouts, or the hobby overall.  Pictures of your trip to Yosemite, pictures of your new bichon frise, pictures of your 1949 Ford F1 pickup...surely there must be someplace on the Internet where people are clamoring to view these.     Note: I'm not referring to threads like "Show us your other hobbies" or "What 4-legged visitors have visited your layout."  Just the "Weekend Photo Fun"  thread.

C'mon Jim, how about a list of secrets on how to take a great picture?  (He did give away one secret on a recent post when he said that the picture was taken with a 25 second exposure.... Hmmmm!)

I will be visiting Jim tomorrow evening (on my way to NH). I hope the pictures I take of his layout come anywhere close to what he takes.

Actually, we published Jim's photo tips in a past issue of the magazine.  I send a text-only version along to prospective authors at their request, along with our Author Guidelines.

DSL?  There's still folks on *horrors* dial-up!

I tell you what we need to solve this: we need to provide each and everyone with a cellphone and a camera and, of course, a motorized stroller!  And this can be accomplished quite simply with a modest posting surcharge of 10c per thread. (This is NOT a tax, mind you!!!)

What's sadder is that you let it ruin it for you.  In the grand scheme of life is it that big enough of an issue to let it ruin the enjoyment of the thread?

It's unfortunate that a few inconsiderate folks have ruined the enjoyment for the rest of us.

And I don't see the need to re-quote but it doesn't ruin the thread for me.  Just too many good shots.

Because sometimes someone will realize that they are offending others and make an effort to change their habits.  I am sometimes guilty of this and will make an effort to stop.

Sounds like some of you could be in Eden if you just stop reading all together.  You guys need a hobby if this is such a blood pressure raising event in your lives.  Maybe a moment of ZEN.  Repeat after me.... Oooooooooohhhhhhmmmmmmm.  Feel better?

Yes, and that is why some simply ignore that whole subject over the last few years. Thus, our lives are MUCH more relaxed.

"You guys need a hobby if this is such a blood pressure raising event in your lives"

Marty, that's not the point.  The reposting doesn't raise my blood pressure or upset me in any way.  It simply takes the fun and enjoyment out of the Photo Fun thread for me.

I love this hobby and enjoy pretty much every aspect of it.  The parts i don't enjoy so much, I simply avoid - What could be better?  Zen aside.

I believe what you all are referring to is called "Netiquette".  It's the rules and proper way of doing things on forums and such.  Just as in life it's considered rude to interrupt, burp, or be mean.... so it is online.  But people just are not aware of proper netiquette.

While I agree it would be much nicer if pictures where not reposted multiple times, it's just something we'll have to live with to see them for the most part.  If if bother's you enough then someone should say something, nicely, about it on that post.   And when you say it, explain WHY you are saying it such as "I'm on an iphone and it takes forever to download multiples of the same picture...." and not just say, "stop doing it jackwagon!".

Let's not all get grumpy and have sand in our tightie whities..... we're supposed to be enjoying our hobby and exchanging information and fun here!

Vacation photos which may or may not include real trains. If they include real trains, try the real trains forum. If that entire post gets requoted, it might take until Christmas to get it loaded.

Back several years it used to be "Sunday Photo's" and it morphed into "weekend photos," followed by "Friday Morning Photos" and finally landing on "one minute after Thursday midnight photos."

I like mint chip ice cream. My favorite flavor. If I have it every day, it loses its appeal.

I don't bother with the photo thread anymore. When I did, I would usually stop when I hit long strings of photos. Even with broadband, it slows stuff down.

The last study I saw shows how demanding we have become. The average person will wait six seconds for a page to load and move on at or near that point. When I open a page and grab the scroll bar the page won't move until the photos are loaded. A few failed attempts to scroll down and it's on to something else.

I also agree about Jim's photos - near flawless.

I'm not criticizing...  I have DSL too and the slowest speed I had was 1.5Mbps and with that speed I did not have a problem loading the page unless there was something else using a chunk of the bandwidth.  How fast is your DSL?

When someone is using a smartphone or 56K dialup, I can understand the frustration but they kind of have to understand when they are on a thread with heavy photo (or video) content that things are going to be a little slow.

Eric,

I'm in NJ.  Verizon is pushing FIOS very hard here, but it isn't available in my area.  I'm kind of in a catch-22 because their DSL offering is very slow and they're not about to upgrade it due to their investment in FIOS.  I had cable, which was very fast, but it was just too expensive.  So until FIOS is available I'll endure the inconvenience.

Phil

Well...I read all of the postings above and this certainly has been interesting.  I too don't particularly like the re-posting of pictures over and over again...but...it certainly doesn't prevent me from enjoying the thread.  Also....I didn't realize that some of you don't like multiple pictures of a scene, etc. in a thread and that you would rather have the poster pick out one or two good pictures and post those instead.  I'm one of those visual guys that loves pictures!  I will admit that when I post a new project I've completed or new pictures with interesting lighting and angles, even though they are of the same scenes, I am one of those guilty of putting up bunches of pictures.  It never occurred to me that some folks would have problems loading them and / or other folks simply didn't like that many being posted.  So...I have learned from this thread and will adjust my posts accordingly....
