This topic has come up a few times before.
There have been many very nice prototypical coal mines and tipples [ coal breakers ]photos posted in response. Some of these took up quite a bit of real estate.
since I like to haul coal drags, there is a mine area on the layout. I used a LIONEL kit built my dad many years ago for the coal breaker. here a few few photos.

The 'prototype' for this, Pugh's Fuels Ltd., is an Welsh coal mine on an old BBC children's show. Here's my look at it. The engine enters the Loop and can pick up coal from the AF elevator or the #96.

Here is a bunch of info on the old coal breakers Located in Schuylkill County PA.
My Great Great Great Grandfather was one of the first mine inspectors for this area back in the 1870's
Although not on layouts they give plenty of info and you can get ideas from them.

Thank you Chip. Great info. What a life in those days. I am building my coal area and just seeing and reading about the realism is very helpful.
