Would you buy a stripped down version of a locomotive with only reverse included, if the said model came with standardized plug and play that would allow you to chose from a variety of add on modules such as smoke, crew talk, sound etc? This would be in replacement of "mandatory" add-ons.

Absolutely - "a la carte" please.

Yes.  This is something MTH(or Lionel)may want to consider.   Why offer a locomotive with all the sophisticated electronics if the thing fails to work out of the box?  HO scale has had this feature for years..Originally Posted by O-gauger:

MTH is offering their SW1 in Maryland & Pennsylvania livery.  Since I am a fan of the "Ma & Pa," I like to add this locomotive to my roster.  But the price and the PS3 put this out of my range.  But offer it as a basic, no frills electronics model a la WIlliams/WBB, I'd snap it up...as I'm sure many Maryland & Pennsylvania fans would. Originally Posted by 56f100:

If I recall it was just two upgrades needed.  One would replace the basic e-unit with TMCC.  The second upgrade would replace signalsounds with full railsounds.  I did both a steam and diesel upgrade and each one took just a few minutes.  For a while Lionel offered the same engines with basic sound and electronic e-unit, also a second version with full railsounds and TMCC.  The basic versions were TMCC and command upgradeable.
