Since I replaced the motor and traction tires on my 1225, the E-unit has begun behaving oddly:
1) It defaults to reverse when at rest for a few moments.
2) When the whistle switch is pushed, all power to the motor is cut until the switch is released. It does this with or without the tender.
Any ideas?

Swap the motor leads, it will then default to Fwd. You may have installed motor/leads 180 out. G

Aha! I think you're right. Two bits sez the red dot has to go to the red lead.

Maybe a repair with a transistor that seemed compatible by spec, but actually needed to be in a reversed position for installation.
A bad transistor in the engine.
A bad transformer whistle switch.
A bad rectifying diode in the engine?
All I know is that, with the motor wired up properly, the whistle works right too (both in forward and reverse). All I can guess is that the half-wave for the whistle does something odd to the circuits if the motor is wired backwards...
