Polar Express 31960, can the smoke output be improved??

Forgive me as I take a sabbatical from the forum during the summer months if this has been solved.

I know I asked last year and there were some comments about opening up the holes and so on but all I got was more smoke out the bottom of the engine than the top!

Sure, my girls are 11 years older than when we bought the set but it's still around the tree every Christmas.
