The E unit died in my Polar Express. The Lionel website shows 3 different ones. One is called a high current, does anyone know if there is a best choice or do you just match what is currently in your loco

You can tell which one to use by looking at the motor. I assume that you have a 6-31960 set. A photo of the box lid would help. The packaging changed when the engine motor and e-unit changed. Series 1 and Series 2.
Well, yes you are correct, matching is the best way to go. There is a part number on the e-unit board. Notice that the one ending in 3100 has an alternate number now. here: Lionel replacement parts-6-31960 e-unit
Trainland in Lynbrook may have it.
Match it unless your skilled at soldering wires or changing connectors. G
I bought the high amp replacement for my Series 1 the first time it died. The second time I replaced the board I used a WbB board. The third time it died, I sold the locomotive and replaced it with a LionChief version. The small motor PE locomotives have better tender and boiler shell details, but that's the only good thing about it.
The small motors are probably fine for pulling 3-4 cars. I'm pulling 10.
Thank you all for your input. Lenny
