I'm not really a scale model guy--nice to look at but the doing is not for me. I enjoy toy trains and accessories, and things like Plasticville. I set up on the floor right now, but I would like to set up in the garage on portable folding tables, like the kind clubs use when they go to shows or set up in public places and set up a Christmas display.

I have four strong folding tables that are 72" x 29", and envision the green table cloth or green felt layout, with buildings, loops, and running trains.

I can't be alone--there must be others like me out there who set up like this. I'd love some ideas, and if you have that kind of temporary layout, or set up in public on tables, I'd really appreciate seeing some pictures.

Thanks!

 A couple of suggestions ...

Get a single piece of indoor/outdoor carpet that will cover the assembled tables - thicker than felt or cloth and will minimize track sliding as well as dampen noise.  The thin material used to underlay laminate wood flooring can be added to dampen noise.  I have also used carpet padding (usually under snow batting) but additional thickness and softness creates problems standing up figures and accessories.

or ...

Lay rigid foam panels on top of the tables.  Paint and scenic to your desires.  If you finalize on a track plan, you can attach track and wiring to the panels so you don't have repeat the process every time you setup.

I used homemade "folding tables" for my last layout.  I bought the folding table legs and used 4x8 sheets of plywood framed and braced with 1x2  The two together in an 8x8 semi permanent layout that easily made the move from one house to the next with track and ground cover still attached.  However the new basement wasn't ready for trains and now that we're looking to move again it's still not ready for trains.
