I've been reading this forum a while, several years, during which time I kept reading about and seeing posts on Lionel Post War trains.

Well, last week after reading many treads on the greatness of Lionel PW and how the values of the collectors market had fallen, thus making them reasonable -- to purchase and to run -- we took the plunge and purchased a 2035, 2025, & 2018 - I know might be a bit much - all in working order, but runners not collectors items. Today, the first two arrived and we've spent the last couple hours running them around an old style loop on the floor of his play room, it has been great fun and entirely without worry and the smell takes me back to being five or six with my dad.

Thanks to all the members who peaked my interest in these great old trains, looks like our steam fleet will be growing in the future, now to figure out how to work the conventional control in DCS so we can put them on the layout.

You have touched a nerve with me.  I have a combination of the wonderful modern equipment and the amazing Lionel Postwar classics.  Plus the gift of 16 grandchildren.

There is no greater thrill for the youngsters then to load up the milk cars, the cattle cars, coal cars and the log cars with the operating accessory.  Then we make them up with the wonderful 1656 switcher and pull them down the main line with the amazing 773 Hudson.  All the while the 1947 2026 Praire pulls a string of 2400 series Pullmans - Elizabeth, Mooseheart, Newark and Clifton.

This Modern era period has enhanced model railroading in wonderful ways.  It is not worthy of arguing which period is the better.  But, postwar Lionels represent an era that will never disappear.  These trains are durable, easy to operate and have a simplicity that is very appealing.  They will still be operating 50 years from now.

Plus, they are toys.  I always remind myself, when I hear the kids squeal "Train Wreck!!!!", that it is a toy.  Repair it, set it back up and let it her rip again!
