Just a few more scratch built structures.
O scale model of the Collinwood Coaling Tower
O scale (1/48) for a coaling tower that is a very close adaptation of the original NYC Collinwood coaling tower. This prototype coaling tower was located between East 146 and East 152 streets in Cleveland, Ohio. The prototype tower was built in 1944. The New York Central also had an extensive engine maintenance yard and facilities.
My O scale structure is 32-3/4 inches to the top of the tower. This scales to 131 feet. The O scale structure is 26-3/4 inches wide not including the adjacent coal conveyor building. The depth is 15-7/8 inches. Overall scale dimensions are 116 by 63-1/2 by 131 feet not including the coal conveyor.
The model dimensions have been scaled from available photos. No attempt has been made to duplicate all prototype details.
The model is made from 3/16 inch foam core board, basswood and Poplar strip wood.

O Scale CSX Engine and Car Servicing Building
This custom built O scale diesel shop or car shop is adapted from a prototypical diesel service building. This O scale model is a scale 100 feet wide by 80 feet long by 44 feet high. Actually two nearly identical buildings have been made. When placed end to end the two buildings are a scale 160 feet in length. Only the two center bays of each building are intended for through tracks. The two outer bays are stub ended. The model is designed to straddle two tracks with track spacing of 24 scale feet between centers. The model also has extensive interior lighting and detailing. All bays have simulated "roll up" doors. The side service entrances also have simulated "roll up" doors. The roof is removable for access to the interior. The interior has prototypical roof beams and heavy side pillars. The model can be completely dis-assembled for easy storage. The building is made from 3/16 inch foam board purchased from art stores. It is very light weight but also very sturdy.
Note: The photos show only one building although I have actually built two nearly identical structures which can be placed end-to-end to make a scale 100 foot wide by 160 foot long diesel house.
The prototype photo attached was used as a guide for determining building proportions in constructing the model.
O scale Scratchbuilt Coal Tipple made from Styrofoam Sheet
This O scale Coal Tipple is made from 3/16 inch Styrofoam Sheet and stripwood.
Overall dimensions: 88 feet x 150 feet x 128 feet (except for conveyor and mine building).
The structure is constructed as 4 separate buildings which "bolt" together. The "headhouse", "screening" building, car "loading chute" building and "maintenance" building. The "conveyor" section and "mine" building have been recently added.
The structure can very easily be disassembled and stored in individual boxes when not in use. The interior of each building has separate removable floors which will be detailed and painted. Interior and exterior LED lighting will also be added. Not shown are the coal chutes for loading hopper cars.
Paul/Matt,
That little station is so railroady looking. I love it! If rairlroady isn't a word, it should be!

Lionel Freight Platform #6-2784 Paint scheme 1 of 3.
This is a very basic plastic kit that can be customized and repainted to make a realistic freight platform that will fit nicely on an industrial siding. Not shown is the added "floor" and "ceiling" inside.
This structure is also available as Lionel 6-16880 which is a built up model.

Bachmann O scale Barn kit. This is Bachmann kit #45602. It is a very basic structure that can be modified and painted to provide a nice background structure. It would be useful in a rural scene.
The attached photos show the original barn and two paint variations. Notice that the large barn doors have been modified, painted and then mounted on the barn.

Was this a kit?
Where did you obtain the various details for your structure? I would like to add some of these items to my models.
Was this a kit?
No. Lot of board by board and scribed siding, etc....however, based on this structure, a kit was developed and sold and may even still be available.

Most came from Berkshire Valley. Some of the counter and bins from Banta Modelworks, figures from Artista. Maybe some from Grandt Line....... Not sure where that rocking chair came from -- CC Crow? Turner Modelworks?? Wish I had a few more of those to put together.
Freight house.
Scratch built in wood.
Andre, Nice!
MWB and Andre,

Some might remember this one from being in OST a few years back....I'd have to look it up to find the exact issues.... All board by board construction with individual clapboard on 2x4 framing from the foundation to the roof.

Outstanding work! Masterful.

Thanks. It's doing a project like this though that can really make you pause about what you take on next. This one, and another one, each basically took over my entire shop, took the better part of a year to complete, and that 2nd one turned from being fun into work towards the end. If I find a another large project that gets me properly motivated, I may take on another large structure.
Problem is, after it's done, I have no use for it since there's no space on my layout for any more structures!
Great job everyone. Lots of inspiration to help get my head back into it. I was digging through some old pics the other day and here are a couple more shots of the Korber and DD buildings, along with a scratch-built one I did. The telephone poles are from the insanely talented Norm Charbonneau.

A few more pictures of the BTS Orbisonia Station.
Are the windows and doors shown in this kit available separately for custom building?
You would have to contact Bill Wade, BTS and ask if he would sell the laser cut windows and door sheets separately. He does sell the shingles sheets separately. There was another vendor who did laser cut windows (Rusty Stumps). Nice thing about these windows was the sticky-back material.
Detail of the windows.
Rusty Stumps. Here is a link, (5) pages of laser cut window/door offering, but I've had the forum unhook my links before, if they are not a forum/magazine sponsor.
