Guys and Gals,

WAY TOO MANY of your posting is being placed in the wrong category....mostly 3-rail scale.  ALL of these posts when reported are being deleted.  We simply have so many going to the wrong sub-forum categories that we don't have time to move all of them.  PLEASE pay attention when you are on your phone or any device and you decide to post that you are posting to a category that makes the most sense.  Some of you are habitual/repeat offenders and the constant posting into the wrong forum is confusing and making searches more difficult.  PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE help us out with this problem!

I am one offender. I posted to O Scale Narrow Gauge forum when it should have gone to Lionel Service. It's unfortunate for both me and the forum because replies where coming in on how to fix a 2055 Locomotive Squeal. But I also think what would help to reduce these errors is to modify the drop down list when selecting a forum to a "rolodex" type list I've seen on other websites. I'm fairly new to this site so when I posted and it asked to select a forum, I thought the short list that appeared were the only forums I had to choose from so I picked the closest fit and that was the O Scale Narrow Gauge. Again, I'm just one person who now has learned so just passing on a suggestion to help others from posts going into the wrong category.

I get what it is you're saying, yet it isn't always possible to be "scale specific", is it?

One of your more prolific posters will often pose pretty general questions, and almost always in the "high rail, O27" category, even if the responses may not be necessarily limited to that particular group.

Example: his "Show Me Your Very Best" thread. He didn't ask specifically for 3 rail stuff, just "anything model railroad related". Most replies have indeed been of the 3 rail type (and let's face it, that's the main focus of this entire site),  yet there have also been some 2 rail responses, including mine.

Just making an observation...

This is a great source of information, and I appreciate the problem.  I have a suggestion.  When I am in a forum, and want to post to another one, I go to the "Home" tab on the banner at the top of the window, and see the drop down menu, but as noted by RAF above, that appears as a short list.  I would suggest to have the complete list appear, as it does when you come to the main landing page for the website.  That's when I see the extensive list of all the subcategories of forums, and it makes me scroll through the list to determine which is best suited for my post.  In my early years on this forum, I had no idea most of them even existed, so probably was a culprit in posting to the wrong forum.

Hope this helps,

Michael

What would be cool, but maybe not possible for the OGR folks to do without CrowdStack's helps, is to have the forum you're currently reading a post in as well as the title of the thread appear in the top bar.  Something like this, see my suggested addition in red in the graphic below.

This would really help as I confess, I see what looks to be an interesting topic on the right and click on it.  It takes me somewhere in the middle of the thread, and there no clue what forum it's in.  So, I'm sure more than once I've posted stuff that really doesn't belong in the forum in question, but I don't realize it.

Well if you are replying to a thread already in the wrong section that's not really on you.  It should all be geared towards the original thread starter to be alerted to what forum the thread is being started in.  Can't say this all bothers me too much but I'm not the one getting the alerts and needing to edit or delete them.  Unfortunately a side effect of sucess.

So in what forum should Carey Williams 1953 GG1 post have been placed ?  That question has not been answered.  It was removed from the 3 Rail Scale Forum, and reposted in the 2 Rail Scale Forum, yet it's a scale length model with hi-rail flanges and center rail pickup.  If this forum existed in 1953, it would have been placed there without question I think.  Does the history of 3RS not belong there ?

It's fine in the 2 Rail Scale Forum if 3RS isn't the place, but why ?  A number of esteemed OGR members seemed to think 3RS was the proper location, so some official guidance would be welcome here for the future.

This is just a pet peeve of mine with this forum, to me it looks like a double standard but I do admit it don’t own or run the forum and the powers to be can run it how they see fit.

the thing that bugs me is importers or hobby stores are allowed to post their announcements, inventory or sales, or shipping now on the main 0-27 board (I which have no issue with them posting).  I do have to wonder why these threads don’t get moved to the Announcement board???   If I make an announcement on a show or some event, it gets moved or deleted.  Which I should have posted it there to begin with.   Seems like one rule for me, a different rule for others, or maybe I’m just being Scrooge.  Who knows.

They do pay the bills around here and this gives them the privileged of posting their sales in any forum they see fit. Most seem to target their sales towards the audience they are trying to reach. I can't say I have a problem with that because if they weren't here then the cost of this forum would most likely end up in our laps and we all know how that would go.

Not really a double standard. The advertisers have paid to play. By the lack of any colored banners next to your handle, you are here for the free ride. Some times on a ride for free, you might be told where to get off.

No, you're not.  I'm right there with ya, pal!

(Biting my tongue to resist posting my own frustration over this infatuation with the DELETE button issue!)
