Hi

I am looking for advise on up coming project and I want to know if can be done at a reasonable cost or to go in a complete different direction. I want to modify to make it look like a MTA (NYC subway) work train. Here are the project detail:

First I want to install LED and replace the bulbs. Would 3 1n4003 in series and 470 ohm 1 watt resistor work to power the leds?

Is there room under the shell to do the following: I would like to take out the horn and install an  ERR sound system or is there something else out there that I could use. If I would use the ERR system which sound card would recommend for this mod?

I would like to install an electronic E-unit, any suggestions?

Thank you for your time and suggestions.

Use the err a.c. commander and f3 sound card. Put the speaker between the air tanks on the bottom. I found the front led head light, marker light board at Lionel , it fit right in the original openings. I used a 3 mm led and 1000 ohm resistor  and diode for the tail light just remember that the ERR  outputs a negative voltage in command mode and a.c. voltage in conventional ,that's why you need a diode. I also put a strobe light on top of the cab. Mine was a 6220 bell ringer .

MTH makes a speaker that is an exact fit for the Williams.  I chose DCS over ERR.  You could go with the Dallee electronic reverse board and sound.  The DCS board fits very well and the MTH electro couplers are a direct fit.    That board has all your reversing and sound in the package.  I used 3 mm LED lighting for front marker lights and I used LED headlights front and rear.  I also installed cab lights and a strobe light on the roof.  I have always been a fan of the Lionel NW2 but not a fan of a single AC motor.  I will be picking up a Williams NYC NW2 at York to do the same conversion.  I love the classic Lionel look but now have the best of both worlds.

You can do ERR with Lionel.  I chose the Williams because it has two DC can motors and is much more powerful than the single AC motored Lionel.  This little locomotive with the metal frame is heavy and will pull all the cars you can put behind it.

I am a big fan of engines that look new with fresh paint.  I am a true toy train guy.   That is another reason I picked the Williams locomotive.
