I believe Lionel used two different diameter dowels to make "logs" for their log dump cars. There were small diameter logs used on cars like the 3461 log dump, and larger diameter logs used on cars like the 3362 log dump. Anybody know the diameter of these dowels. I need to make some "logs".

I use 1/2" dowels for the 3461 dump cars, they work in the #162 and #362 log loaders as well.
CharlieS,
Guns is absolutely correct the 1/2" dowel cu and painted works and looks great,
I even have some left the original light wood color for the raw lumber look, most any hobby shop stock them. If you want to even look more real, bush branches and smaller Hickory branches look real cool also.

I slapped some stain on a bunch of mine to darken them, and I even dipped a few in polyurethane clear coat to finish them. I decided I like them more just stained without the shiny finish, so I left the rest raw.
I recommend staining only as laquer coated logs tend to vibrate to the rear of the car as the train goes around. Stained logs stay put longer.

Good point, I liked the look better anyway.
Thanks Guys!
I'll be stopping to get a couple of dowels to cut up today.
I still need to know the size of the larger diameter logs that were used on the 3362 log dump, and many similar ones from the modern era.
