I just recently purchased a ZW and got around to taking it apart tonight to replace the carbon rollers. As I was doing so I noticed the right hand handle has red numbers and letters; it also has a lot of excess play when advancing the handle forward and back. My questions are: 1) Did the handle originally have red lettering? 2) How do I go about tightening up the handle assembly to remove the excess play?

you may have to pull the handle off the spindle and epoxy it back in place. I have had to do that with a few ZWs.
Never seen the red lettering. My guess someone used red nail polish to give it the hot rod look.
I would pop the top, 4 screws, and give the handle a look and see if there are any broken parts or anything missing. Heres a link to Olsens Lionel transformer information.

I have three ZW transformers and one has red numbers on the handles, all original, Vic
Four of my ZWs have yellow lettering and three of them have red lettering on the handles.
The ultimate postwar ZW source is Tranz4mr’s ZW Page .
I will have to check my ZW's. Susan, thanks for the link to the ZW page looks good.

Thank you everyone for helping to answer my questions! I wonder why Lionel made some handles with red lettering. At least I know I've got original handles! I'll be heading to the hardware store later to pick up a 4-40 screw and get the handle off tonight to clean and see if anything needs to be replaced before getting it back on!
