As the railways of Ireland dieselized, they became a home for a variety of locomotives built and exported by EMD. One such unit, the original member of the 141 Class of double ended locomotives, has been preserved and repainted in a vintage livery. Here's a website with a fairly well detailed summary of the introduction and use of this class of diesel:

It is interesting to note the purchase price of the locomotive for preservation was funded by Mr. Paddy Murphy, owner of Murphy Models for whom Bachmann's UK Branchline brand builds OO models of Irish prototypes.

Very interesting, Bob; thanks for the post. I'm glad to see the active enthusiast community in Eire. Like Britain, Ireland had many rural branchlines that were torn up over the years, with the business going to bus lines and autos. There are groups all over the island now that focus on rehabbing rural stations and short pieces of track. I think most of their original steam equipment is gone, and I am glad that they are now preserving the early diesels.

Here, for instance, is a group I came across yesterday, whose focus is preserving the railway station in the film "The Quiet Man"  :http://www.ballyglunin.com/
