I have a prewar Lionel 226E in my shop that needs a boiler front. While it isn't an exact replacement, I think I can get away with using a 736 Boiler front.
The reason I am interested in going this route is because I think I can get my hands on a Modern era Lionel factory replacement, as opposed to using a reproduction.
My sense is that the factory part would be higher quality.

Anybody know whether the 736 Boiler front will fit a prewar Lionel 226E?

The 726 and 736 Boilers have their screws perpendicular to the boiler, where as the 225E, 226E, 763E Boilers mount with screws parallel to the boiler and would not be a drop in replacement.

Olsens Toy Train parts has the part you need and I have been very satisfied with their quality, as have many others on this forum.
