I have a Prewar Lionel 46 crossing gate I want to remove the solenoid from the unit (the red base part) the rivets came out easy enough but the plunger /coil will not pull out ...Do I have to remove the rivet from the gate before it will drop out ... OR..? The coil will move @ 1/4 inch then feels stuck.. thanks for the info DAniel

Figured it out I thought the pin held in in the part taht pulls the gate down .. But it does not looks like it was just a little stubborn.T to get out it ended up needing a little ummf!..

Could be the coil overheated and warped the sleeve. Check the coil for open, short,and resistance. You should get some kind of resistance reading,maybe 20 ohms or something. If it is good and the plunger works freely lubricate it with a small amount of graphite.
