Hi,

In my daily Craigslist search, I've come across two items that I would like a bit of advice on.  The first is a 227E with 2227B tender, both with decent boxes.  The asking price is 675.  Both units look extremely clean.  I did an hour or so of research, and couldn't find anything comparable to price check.  The second item is a 2354 NYC engine and dummy set, supposedly boxes and units are as new with a price of 550.  Boxes don't mean a bunch to me, but I'll take them if they have them.  Decent prices, or wait for something cheaper?

Thanks,

John

There is no such engine as a 227E. There is a 227 pre-war switcher. There is also a 227 post-war CN alco. OK this is what you have, a 227 pre-war switcher with a bell ringing tender. If it is in real good condition, like nothing broken like the marker lights it is could be worth around $600 to $700. in todays market. 15 years ago it was worth a lot more. I'll let someone else tell you about the 2354.

I should add that with the boxes in real good condition, it could be worth a lot more. the boxes are worth as much as the engine. Hope this helps.

I paid just under $500 for a pre-war 227 a couple of months ago without boxes.  The tender had postwar trucks.   If you don't care about the boxes put them on ebay as empty boxes for pre-war Lionel generally sell.

I would say the 2354 are no bargin, but not completely out of line if they are real clean and no battery damage or rust.  Again put the boxes on ebay somebody will buy them.  One additional point is of the they have the Master Carton in addition to the individual boxes and liners it would be a bargin

As new?  I would say if that's true, they don't come along that way very often.  You need to verify "as new", then be careful not to damage the boxes.  Does it have inner wrapping and instruction manual?  As new, meets one of the $$ factors along with rarity & complete with all the original sales stuff.  Look carefully at the wheels & rollers for signs of wear, sparking, dings, etc.
