Now I know everyone has thought that the price of track maybe high at times. So I found the following information interesting and I'd like to pass this along.

I own some Department 56 items and I use them during the holidays in my displays. Well Department 56 has just announced their 2013 village introductions. In the past they have brought out ceramic trains that do not move and they are just a decoration. Well they are bringing out a new steam engine $70 for their North Pole Village. So for the first time they are also bringing out track to go along with these trains that do not move.

The track for the North Pole train is $18.50 for 1 straight piece which is 8.5" long x 3" wide or a curve piece that is 11.5" long x 4" wide.

The other track that they are also bringing out is for their Halloween Village which again is track that just sits there. The cost of a straight piece of track that is 10.25" long x 4" wide is $27.50 and is the same price for a curve piece that is 8" long x 4.4" wide.

I'm glad that they don't make or sell tracks for model trains.

I've stopped in a couple of stores that sell Dept 56. One sells for only retail and the other discounts retired items. I bought a lighting set from the full retail store because the item had been sitting around for several years and was now discounted because of inflation!

The best deals that I got came from Craigslist and an estate sale.

phillyreading,

What you do is go to the small trains shows, and purchase FasTrack when someone is selling it off, at a good low price.   Unless you absolutely have to purchase new, there are much better ways to pick up FasTrack in bulk, including the custom pieces.  I have lots of FasTrack because I purchase it in this manner, and seldom do I ever get a piece of bad FasTrack.

I have a hard time finding used Fastrack anywhere. That last 3 train shows I've been to here in Florida produced not a single track. The prices that all the manufactures of roadbed track ask are highway robbery if you ask me. And the price of the remote switches! Incredible. Needless to say most of my layout is mainly tubular. I use 027-042 and 027-054 for my curves and new, that's not cheap either and is very hard to find used at a good price. It is what is is, I reckon.
