Prices for used DCS

   I strongly recommend never purchasing a used DCS, always purchase new from a

store where you get the MTH guarantee.

I roll the dice on these things and it has worked out so far.  It really has to do with your risk tolerance.

 

I was approx. $200 for the TIU and remote.  It was up for "buy it now" and I would have saved $15 if I would have pulled the trigger early.  When a ZW showed up for $99 on "buy it now"  I did not wait on that one, I snagged it right away.

While I've had my TIU and remote for almost 11 years, I agree with Dave. Buy a new one from a dealer. I can't speak to the current TIU's and remotes, but I opened up both and put a piece of foam between the RF board and the case to ensure that the RF boards remain seated properly.

GOOD LUCK buying a NEW one, at least for the near future. Unless you find a dealer that has one in stock. I did some Ironhorse trading at my LTS, and asked them to order me an extra DCS remote control, that was before Christmas, and all the distributers and MTH are out of stock. Certainly when more are produced and get a boat ride they will be available again, but right now, they are evidently hard to find.

I would by a used one. I had four remotes at one time and they all worked good from the very first issue to the one I bought two years ago. The first one the thump wheel broke and it was an easy cheap upgrade repair.

I have bought both a used rev I3a TIU and a used handheld, both with good results.

As long as the seller provides some assurance that the stuff works, should be OK.

Better yet if you find it on this forum.

If it is going to be your "main" DCS system. Get a Rev L brand new.

Now I would consider buying extra remotes or a "back-up" DCS system for just under the Christmas tree used. I saw a DCS system go for as little as $170 shipping included on e-bay.

What is up with MTH distribution/production?  I just received the most recent newsletter, where the VP of marketing was interviewed and asked about the issue with shipping out product (steam locos - non Railking).  He stated that they had factory issues in Korea and had to move tooling to other sites, blah, blah, blah.    Steam product announce in early 2012/late 2011 that won't ship until first quarter 2013.  The Premier GP30s announced in 2012, where suppose to ship in Dec 2012, then bumped to Feb 2013.  Here we are halfway through the month with no announcement that they have shipped.  Now you are indicating that DCS remotes are scare!  Production issues seems to be affecting all product lines.  More on topic I found a LHS that had two new DCS systems already at Rev L.  I agree that going new is best in this case.
