I have seen some of you use printed shipping containers on your layouts. I am wondering how best to do this. Does anyone have any recommendations as to the type of paper to use or type of printer? Should I buy a regular shipping container and apply the printed parts to the outside?

I haven't messed around with it in sometime, but I was trying to print out "containers" and then using contact cement to apply them to blocks of wood. Hardest problem I was having was getting everything to scale.

Tom,
Mike DeBerg who frequently posts on the 2-rail forum had these containers printed on thick card stock at this year’s Chicago O-Scale March Meet. The designs are by this company, DigCom Designs who have multiple refrigerated & non-refrigerated container & trailer models for many scales except O-Scale. Mike was able to request & get the pdf files scaled up for O-Scale & he printed them on thick card stock, cut & glued them together. From a few feet away, I couldn’t tell that they were printed & folded until I held them close to my eyes.
These are just my opinion,
Thanks,

Printing containers would not be much different than printing structures....which is common. You could use any good Vector Graphics program to create the artwork and print them on a good laser printer. Ink jet could be used but when you see the difference you will use the laser....even if you have to pay to print them.
And like structures I apply 3M spray glue to the paper and mount them to regular 'poster board' you get at the drug store etc. Then cut and assemble. You could even weather the containers!
End result would be much like these......close up you see they are printed.....a few feet away.....not.....
