I just picked up the MTH Long Island FA-2A (Hi-rail Wheels) Diesel Engine w/proto sound 3.0 and I'm having some issues getting it to run. When I throttle it up using the Z-4000 I keep it at 7.5 and wait the 30 seconds when it starts up. When I push the red direction button for it to go it doesn't. When I increase the power once it hits 10 it goes into shut down mode. I've tried other trains on the track and they run fine. I also tried the Long Island on other tracks and the same thing happens.

The lower the startup voltage, the longer it takes the super caps to charge. Try starting at 12 volts and watch the current. With the smoke unit off, about 0.3 amp is normal. Press the direction button and see if it moves. If it shuts down, I suspect a poor ground on both power trucks.
Was this used? if so clean the wheels and oil pickup rollers. Also inspect rollers. I have seen frozen and or worn rollers and or corrosion in between roller and pin also effect power input from center rail. If this is new, then it could be screws where black wires pickup power from truck block having poor contact. G
Start up at about 10-12 volts and wait approximately 20-30 seconds for the sounds to come up. It takes time for the supercaps to charge. When you push the direction button - push AND hold it down for 2-3 seconds, then release. This is the norm when you are operating PS3 in conventional.
good luck
