I know this sounds like a dumb question and problem, but it is a big concern at the moment for me. I just received a new MTH Z1000 transformer today and everything seemed fine with transformer function and I was pleased, until my wife walks in and says "what is that strong plastic odor I smell?" I said it is just a temporary new train item odor that will go away after awhile. Well until the odor goes away I can't keep the transformer in the room with the trains! What can I do to either mask that odor or get rid of the strong plastic like odor fast? This is crazy and I have never had this problem with any train related item before. Help with some ideas please.

What you have to understand is made from  oil products and sometimes the electronics dropping voltages inside modern transformers get warm or hot and if contacting the inside of the transformers heats up the plastic and causes odor's as you describe .

Especially the MTH z4000 I have noticed that the case smells like a part inside has burnt up bit I could never find a bad part , I'm guessing it's the kind of plastic they used for the case, so you just have to get use to the odor, you might try placing some baking soda in a small dish or box with the transformer sitting in the closed box the baking soda will absorb the odor and then throw out the container or box it was in and toss it out then . for instance if your refrigerator has odors from food you can put a dish or "box small" filled with baking soda and will absorb all the bad odors inside the refrigerator and then you throw out the small container of baking soda and the odors will go away!

Well I tried getting rid of the odor on the transformer and it was just as bad if not worse than before, so I decided to do what rockstars1989 suggested and I returned the transformer for a full refund including all shipping.

I will buy another MTH Z1000, but this time I am going to a LHS and make sure everything is ok before I buy it. Also I am bringing along my wife for added insurance so she can give the final ok (her sense of smell is far greater than mine). I have owned three other MTH transformers and I never had issues with any of them.

"Problem solved"... So how does taking it back solve the oder problem...other than the source is out of the house? What if a new one does the same thing by smelling just as bad? Problem is still there.

If the next one also has the odor, then I guess NC5Jonny will choose another power source. His problem is solved. On the other hand, perhaps MTH has an unsolved problem.

I drove out to H & R trains yesterday and bought a new old stock MTH Z-1000 transformer from them and everything is great. No odor and all works like it should on this transformer. Now I am happy and most importantly my wife is happy with it too. I don't know what was wrong with that other transformer, but perhaps the plastic did not cure properly.  My wife seems to be very sensitive to odor which is the reason I don't run my smoke units too much either.
