Just received my NEW Lionel 30K Tank Car w/Sounds (#85086).  The Owners Manual is wrong!   Page 4 says:

.2 Pull the die-cast warning placard off the cross-bar.

The warning placard is not die-cast,  it's made out of plastic & mine was glued in so couldn't  be removed.   AND, it doesn't have to be removed anyway to remove the end cap!

Page 5 says:

NOTE   The switch must be pushed all the way in to the stops for the volume adjustment knob to line up with the hatch.

There is NO Switch to push in AND the Potentiometer does not line up, therefore you can not adjust the Volume.  My "POT" is off at least 3/16" from the Hatch Hole. It does not line up!!  There is no way to adjust the Volume on my car!!

I'm in the process of trying to get an answer from "LIONEL"!!

Will Post the results.

PS..... Has anyone else had this problem??

the placard is diecast, I knocked mine out putting kadees in and had to file the post clean and redrill the hole to get it back in the frame. It was poorly glued in. I assume the fit was poor between the parts and they had to be glued. But yes, the cap comes off with the placard in place.

No issues getting to the volume pot though. I guess this is the sound file after everyone complained about the squeaks and bangs in the PS-1s. The sounds in these is much more subdued.

Did you ever find the "SWITCH they mentioned on page 5 ???   OR did the "POT" just line up with the Hatch Hole?

Fred

No problems with mine. I bought three of them. The placard does come out carefully and you can remove the end cap.

The cars have the same basic design as the vision line tankers. The note about the volume pot lining up with the hatch hole is referring to if you open the end cap and would need to remove the electronics and put them back. The rail sounds board slides along a track inside the tank car.  You need to be sure the volume pot is lined up with the hatch hole.

You really should not have to remove the end cap for anything as the switches are set for the best effect as is.

Here is a video of two of the new sound tankers running on my layout. The 6th and the 13th cars in the consist are the new sound tankers.

My CARGIL Tank Car "Placard" was Plastic & Glued in. It is not possible to move the "POT" in my car to lineup with the Hatch Hole. I have referred the matter to Lionel Service. Probably will not hear from them until after the Holidays. I have a friend who is receiving one of these cars for Xmas, so will see how his lines up.  Either way, to send it back to the Dealer or to Lionel, it will cost me Shipping Charges.

Your 2nd paragraph is incorrect. The Owners Manual refers you to a "SWITCH" on top of the Car, and it's not there!! I'm sorry!! Take a look at the Sketch on Page 5 of the Owners Manual!!

You put it on the car on the track, apply power and move and the cars make sound. You open the end cap. Two switches. max and min effect on the left and sound no sound on the right.

Open the roof hatch and stick a small jewelers screwdriver into the hatch hole and you will find the volume pot.

Can I ask what we're the tank tank cars that Didn't have the conspicuity striping in your up consist? The catalog only shows the Cargill green drop cars as not having conspicuity striping. Thanks in Advance.

I wondered if these had the new sounds.  If so I'm glad I didn't send my box cars back to get them changed.  I think the tank car is sorely lacking in sounds, doesn't make nearly enough sounds.  I ordered one of each but only tried one car.  Same with the box cars.  Now I'm wondering if I should get them all out to try.  I haven't yet as my layout isn't done yet and I ran out of shelf space.  Kinda late for the box cars, but I should check the tankers.

I have the VL Ethanol cars, they're great.  They had more sophisticated electronics, they even sensed when they were on a curve and added more flange squeal, very tricky.  Of course, they're also command controlled, and you can trigger stuff like flat wheel simulation, etc.

The last couple of sound products have been somewhat disappointing, I like the ability of controlling the sounds in command, and also turning them on and off.

Hey Moe,

You Da Man, You Da Man

You were right on with Eric Siegals YouTube presentation of the Vision Line Ethanol Tank Cars!!

The PCB does slide out in these cars I just purchased. All I had to do was reposition the Board about 3/16" to move the board and line up the "POT" with the hole under the hatch! Evidently it was pushed in too far by whoever was assembling my Car!!!

Thank you so much for taking the time to forward that to me!!! It's people like you that make this Forum what it is today!!

Sincerely,

Fredstrains

Are these new tank cars similar in design to the Vision Line ones from years ago?

Eric did a review when they came out.  At about the 3:00 mark, he shows how to access the electronics in the car.  Maybe it could help?

I too had this problem with the new Freightsound tank cars.  Thanks to Fred for starting the thread, thanks to Moe for posting Eric's video and finally to Eric.  His video was perfect for seeing how to fix them.  I received 2 of 3 cars with the sound boards shoved too far inside thus misaligning the "POT" with the hatch.  The worst was 5 inches deep.  I had to remove the other end cap to push the board back to the other end of the car where it was supposed to be.  The POT is on the opposite end of the board from the switches and finally lined up.  The safety placards were glued in so I was careful in removing the end caps.  Here are photos:

BEFORE:  on the switch end.  Someone was having a bad day on the assembly line I think:

Shoved 4 inches too deep

BEFORE:  on the POT end:

AFTER: The POT end was pushed to the other end of the shell

Pushed back to correct

AFTER: The Switch end is correctly positioned and the switches are accessible.

Corrected

AFTER:  The POT is now correctly positioned under the hatch.

Fixed

Thanks to everyone for the help and avoiding the hassle of returning the cars.

As for the sound effects, I like the wheel squeals a lot.  The banging sound is more like a kid banging pots and pans and unfortunately seems to be the dominate sound effect.  I'd like to see MTH do this inside a Husky stack.  If they caught the sounds of those big things rolling along, that would be very nice.

Merry Christmas and Happy holidays to all.

Bryan

The other tank cars are an earlier release ACFX Lionel 30K tankers. No sound in those. They came in a 3 pack.
