I've got a legacy Big Boy #4012 (6-11126) and it recently developed a problem with the gearbox on the rear set of drive wheels. The rear gearbox is loose and jumps up and down as the engine runs. The gear box is held down to the chassis by a screw with a spring. I've retightened the mounting screw and the gearbox still moves around a little. Also the plate the covers the exposed gears has come loose and when I try to put it back on the screws don't grip the threads and the plate falls off. I've included a video to show the gear box wobbling around.

Any help on this repair is greatly appreciated.

I always do when ordering replacements parts and good to know about the sale. I was asking if anyone else has had this problem and what they've done to correct it.

Thanks again

This is a common problem with gear boxes in which the bottom cap traps the the axle bushings the screws loosen just enough to allow the bearings to rotate and it causes the bearing seat to wallow out. I would replace the gearbox left and right clamshell  with what ever else you need. When you reassemble use some loctite or paint the head of the screws and don't over tighten. When I rebuild / CLA gearboxes I also put some loctite on the bearing seats a little extra assurance the bearings don't rotate in their seats. I wish they used square bushings on the gearbox axle shaft. I have a couple of old Williams and Weaver brass locos which have this problem of the bushing seats being wallowed out. When these axle bushings wear it also changes the mesh between the gear on the axle and the idle gear of the box. If these bushings were square and made in an upper and lower half ( or front / rear) it would be easy to replace them. As it is you have to pull the drive wheels off and re-quarter them on assembly.          j
