I am having trouble with an LW transformer. The two fixed voltage posts are putting out the correct voltage but the variable doesn't put out anything at all. The light on the handle changes intensity as you move the handle. From other posts I understand that there is a circuit breaker on these tranformers that can go bad. Any ideas on what might be wrong would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris

We need more information due to the confusion as to which terminals/posts you consider "the two fixed voltage posts" and the fact that there are actually 2 common posts on this transformer, both labeled "A". "U" is the variable track voltage post on this transformer, and should go to the center rail, clip "1" on the lockon, and post "A" to clip "2".
Please refer to the post labeled names and tell us what your findings are that way.
sounds like the wiper on the throttle arm isn't contacting the windings. If it has been apart recently, that's probably the reason. It is somewhat tricky to reassemble an LW because the copper wiper has to go underneath the bracket to sit on the windings. If not, no contact--no output
"The light on the handle changes intensity as you move the handle."
From what I see in the circuit diagram for an LW, the light in the handle is connected through the circuit breaker. If so, the light would be off if the circuit breaker was open (bad).
I'd check the direction control switch, whistle control switch, and all the electrical connections. Its not common in an LW, but sometimes a wire will become detached from its connection point.
Gentlemen, thank you for your advice. Discovered that the problem lies with direction switch. The points are touching all the time. Thanks again! Chris
The direction switch is normally closed.
The points should be touching all the time.
C.W. you're right. When I re-assembled the transformer after replacing the cord I didn't pay attention to the direction switch. I took apart the transformer again and repositioned the direction switch so that the points are in constant contact. Now it works like a charm. Thanks again for your assistance. Chris
That is the trick when servicing an LW. Watch out for that. Many of them will also have rotted wires inside.

Rob, I checked the wires when I had the transformer apart and didn't see any issues. Thanks for the warning though. Chris
