Hi any one know if I have a bad TIU or not. When I try to add a PS3 or PS2 Engine the remote says check track I have a clean piece or track and it not a huge layout. I have even tried just having two pieces or track and it still does the same thing. It will add the engine but no name and can't do any soft keys or anything will run and shut down and start up. But when u hit a button it says check track all the time. I am powering the TIU with a MTH 500 Brick right into the fixed voltage in 1 and fixed DCS out 1 to track. Some one told me that the 500 might not be powering it enough any help thanks Randy.

It is hard to tell, still can be an engine issue. Do you have another engine to test with? The Z-500 is good enough for small layout.
You can switch to Fix 2 and see if that works, just remember to jumper input power to Fixed 1 so that the TIU has power.
If the engine is on the track and when you apply power it stays quiet and dark, but you hear the relay click, you at least know the watchdog signal is being received.
Since it added, initially, but not all data transferred. It does seem to be a signal strength issue, or the engine has some problems. Clean wheels, harness plugged in completely and a few other things that can be checked. G
Yea I have two PS3 Engines and 2 PS2 they all do the same thing have no idea whats going on maybe they all got a bug or something they use to work then one day the would not add anymore. Also when you first plug the Tiu in the engine starts up right away and I only have on engine at a time. I have no other TIU so not sure if it that or not
What version of DCS are you operating and what is the model (Rev) number of your TIU?
Regardless, connect the TIU's Remote Input port to the base of the remote with a telephone handset cable (the curly one that goes between the phone and the handset) and see if things improve.
Based on what are your findings, we can proceed from there.

Its the 4.20 in both the tiu and remote. I just tried connecting to fixed voltage in2 and the red light don't come on but it does send power to the track and the train start moving by it self no start up or sound and it seems like the remote won't talk to the tiu when its going through fixed 2 and have the remote connected via phone cord
ok moved power to fixed 1 in and out of fixed 2 to track no power to track

Fixed 1 needs power as well to turn the tiu ON .... fixed 2 is a straight through connection. so the tiu must be ON to impose the dcs signal.
so I have to send power to fixed 1 then also power fixed 2 via another power source?
Yep! Two ways to do it, jumper fixed 1 in over to fixed 2 in with a couple of pieces of short wire.... or use the aux power jack on the tiu .
ok did that i put a different engine on and it started up but now the remote says no engine to add but the engine says running in idle but wont add to the remote
You really need to be clearer. Please state exactly what you did and exactly what happened as a result.
Try the telephone handset cable while using Fixed #1.
sorry all new to this whole dcs. So guess I can start I got the TIU and Remote it work fine when I got it and everything was working. I had it disconnected for some time as its not a permanent setup yet. Then one day I went to add the engines as there when none in the remote. The Remote gave me a check track and took a little bit then it said engine add to address 1 then there was no name just 1 and it would start up but first it would say check track. and then start up and sometimes is would move. So I have tried everything you have been telling me right down the the key and nothing seems to change no madder what I do. if this kinda makes sense. I have had the remote connected right to the TIU and Everything. Also tried using fixed out 2 on the TIU and still does the same thing tried resetting everything TIU,Remote, can't the engines tried and nothing. And it all happens with every engine I have both Proto 2 and Porto 3 the only thing I was thinking is getting a new tiu and trying that. not sure whats going on its crazy read everything on it even got the into to DCS book nothing even after tried that.
Hang in there. It sounds to me like you may have the wires reversed going to the track. The red out put on any channel must go to the center rail. black to outside..
Is that the way you have it ? DCS won't work if it isn't. Maybe we can eliminate 2 birds with one stone also ...
Does the "read" find the tiu (bottom left on remote) you should get a message something like "TIU #1 found. no AIU box connected "
Yep I have a lock on and it connected with red center rail and black outer even tried using Lionel Fast Track and made sure I had Red Center and Black outer. And when I hit read on the remote is says Tiu 1 found and don't have a AIU so says no aiu so that's all good.
I'm out of suggestions .Only wanted say the engines should remain dark and silent when the tiu is powered up..... Seems yours are starting up with sounds??? Yes or no?
yea as soon as you apply power to the tiu it powers up don't say dark so it seems like the tiu don't send the watch dog signal out. I think I might just have to try a new tiu seems like something is going crazy with it. Also there's this guy that know some stuff at a hobby shop in my town so going to see if he can test it. Thanks For all your help I will let you all know what the out come is. Just weird how all my engine do the same thing who knows lol seem like a bug in the system. Thanks Again for all you advise really helped me learn more about all this.
Wait...Menu/System/ DCS set up/ AON (s3) turns signal on to all channels.
ok also tried that says all on made sure everything was turned on
Darn!!!
ya its crazy. I also have the old school dcs remote commander trying running the trains in that but think the change something with the tiu not sure why that dont work tried to reset them with that and cant so looks likes it to the hobby store to see if the tech can check it out
It does sound like the TIU is not putting out the DCS signal if the engines start right up. G
Just for the sake of completeness, reverse only the wires at the Fixed #1 output of the TIU channel.
thanks that was what I was wandering just reading all you talked about and nothing changed thanks again for all your help.
You still have 2 more var channels that can be set to fixed mode, or have you had enough.
It's unlike all channel are faulty but....
This is probably not your problem but did you try replacing the battery in the remote with a fresh one? Strange things happen when there is no power in the remote.

The old TIU can be repaired, and it's always handy to have an extra.
One place you can always send MTH stuff for repair is to MTH.
I can do the repairs. E-mail is in my profile. G
