No way I could have a layout on the floor with my back, legs, and knee problems. It's no fun trying to get down to the floor to pick up something or needing using my rollator walker seat to get my arms on it to boost me back up off the floor. Easier to buy $10 reacher grabbers with rubber grip pads in the pharmacy at Walmart to pick up anything off the floor. My wife and I each have one by our recliners, one in the kitchen, one by my workbench, and one by my layout. They certainly come in handy. It's hard enough to get down to do wiring under the layout. I use a store bread rack with plywood screwed onto the top of it and a couple pillows held on by velcro to cushion my back when having to do wiring under there. The caster wheels on the bread rack make it much easier to move around than having to crawl on the floor.

I have a 6x11 floor layout and have used seldom this year due to issues of getting down then back up. I’ m 75 so its not fun anymore, especially if you want to change out cars or engines. Of course I just pressure washed my patio then on my hands and knees cleaned up the joints and put more polymeric sand in between the pavers.  Knee pad was mandatory. Got to stay active!
