Hey all I have a question about upgrade options for an older Proto-2 locomotive (20-2529-1) that I want to upgrade to Proto-3. I have already disconnected the wires and removed the Proto-2 board. What is the next step? Do I have to get a whole new Proto-3 board or just the upgrade kit? Would the whole new board be easier?

Thanks,

Peter

Quite frankly, unless the board is 5 volt or shot (I'm not taking the time to run down the model number), I wouldn't bother with the upgrade at all.  But, if you want to proceed, I would get an upgrade kit, which includes all harnesses, speaker, and lights and is available to the general public.  Going to PS3, you're getting into LEDs and there are wiring changes (no battery, for example)

Get the PS-3 Diesel Kit and read the instructions twice.  PS-3 Diesel requires removing all wires, and bulbs and replacing with kit parts.  I would look at leaving the original Markers in place if this unit has them and just make sure polarity is right when you plug them into the new harness.  G

I would leave the original markers there but green really bugs me. I plan on ordering the red LEDs from MTH but I'm not sure how much of a hassle it will be to install.

The board is both 5 volt and shot. I also got tired of the mediocre sound sets that were available for my loco in PS-2. MTH finally made a good sound set when the Anniversary locos were released in PS-3.

Upgrade kit comes with one green and one red set.  Front and back Markers. G

Sounds good to me. Still need to order red markers as Amtrak runs red on both ends and why MTH couldn't get it right the first time is annoying, seeing as the latest production run of the exact same model did get it right.

How hard would it be to have to solder the red leds to plugs? I know it has to be soldered, but how hard is it to solder something like that?
