The engine is an RSD-5. Jersey Central. 30-20484-1. The whole thing is shot. It's really a matter of basically putting in a new board and installing new wire bundles. What exactly is included in that upgrade kit?

A complete kit. board, board bracket, electrocouplers, LEDs, wiring harness, tach sensor, tach tape, screws, sensor mounting brackets, and new speaker. When they say kit- it's just that- a true kit of all the electronics in a typical engine-LEDs for all lights, complete 40 pin wiring harness with all optional lighting options -example mars, ditch lights, markers, strobe, etc..

In fact, one could say, the diesel kit is the most comprehensive kit (compared to the steam) because of that fact of all the additional LEDs provided. You could add every possible known option and have more lights than a Christmas tree in many cases.

The Diesel upgrade manual https://mthtrains.com/sites/de...ction/50as18328i.pdf

Keep in mind, many of these outputs are pairs of LEDs, not just singles. It's often more features than many of the models may have even had in first place before upgrading.

I want to personally thank you for taking the time to write such a nice response. I'm in a bit of a pickle because what happened was, when trying to change a traction tire, this engine requires the removal of the whole wheel truck because the screws are on the underside and can can't be reached directly. When putting the truck back in place, I believe I crimped some wires going to the headlights, which then made their way back to the board and ... you know the rest of the story. So what I really wanted to do is pretty much reinstall a new board and new wire bundles for as much as I can. As we used to say in the corporate world: "lessons learned."

I just checked and looks to me that all are out of stock. Wow they go quick!!!!

They’re being put out in batches, as the boards get tested and packaged,….there’s only 2 fellas there during the day, so it takes time to put a batch together,…..stay tuned, and keep checking back, OR create an account and put them on your wishlist, and you’ll get a notification via email that there’s some available!…

Last question,

is this something for someone that has never done a PS3 upgrade can do. With little tech skills???

You don’t have to be a rocket surgeon or a brain scientist, ……having some basic electrical knowledge is a plus. There are clear instructions on the how to. You will need basic skills such as soldering, cable management, fitting of parts, etc. ……naturally, doing a diesel first is an excellent way to get your feet wet, as everything is under one shell. Best advice is if you’re not sure of something……ASK!!,…..don’t fry a board on a 50/50 guessing game …..😉

Can one flash the boards themselves?

Absolutely!….you can have the board pre-set for your particular model by mthpartsandsales.com, or you can have them delivered as is with the “test” file installed. All boards have the “test” file installed. This allows the techs preparing the boards for packaging/shipment to verify you’re getting a properly working board BEFORE it leaves the warehouse……if you’d like to learn more, go to mthpartsandsales.com, click on Helpful Stuff, and read this doc ( see the listing highlighted in blue in the pic ) that Mike Reagan took the time to prepare …..it’s good reading!…
