For some time I’ve been wondering if these two specific products are prototypical in terms of scale length? Those products are:
9.5” 2-bay coal hopper
RMT Tanker
K-Line 9.5” hopper: Also made by K-Line by Lionel & RMT. Pictures & Links below. Measures ≈9.5” coupler to coupler. The body measures 8.5”. Taking that last measurement into account, that’s 34 scale feet.
The Reading had 34’ hoppers that went to Conrail.
RMT Conrail type HR5A(sometimes shown as HR5-A?)
links regarding the prototype HR5A:
From the Conrail Photo Archive by the Conrail Historical Society:

From the Conrail Encyclopedia or CrYc. The top hopper is an HR5A:

US Air Force Ballast Car(produced under K-Line by Lionel)
Link to Lionel’s product page for the above hopper. Note the scale as “traditional”https://www.lionel.com/products/us-air-force-hopper-with-ballast-load-6-22317/

i know RMT doesn’t necessarily make scale products but it seems that they might’ve- at least with the Conrail hopper.
finally, are the RMT Tank cars scale size for steam or steam/diesel transition era? Akin to Atlas 8k tank cars in size? Or are they totally not scale?
any help is much appreciated!
happy New Years!
