PRR G5 scratch built

Intriguing.  Nice, uniform buttons on that tender.  Scratchbuilt, except for the GM parts and tender trucks.

Hmm... it looks like the axles are "captive" in the chassis, and I swear that looks like the worm wheel from a Lionel Hudson!  I'm not an expert when it comes to vintage O scale brass, but definitely doesn't look like the stuff that Jerry White's successor (Rod Miller) is building today.

Nice one - no clue as to the builder, Carey. My dad sold lost wax detail parts in O for many years. Met many real craftsmen that would start with a sheet of brass and some purchased parts and then yield something like this a year or so later.

It looks to me like the GM (General Models) axle mountings.    It appears there is a slotted screw showing on the hub.    

the lead does look like GM/AN also.    

the overall model looks to be scratchbuilt using perhaps these parts and others and then fabricating the main superstructure.

That gearbox sure looks like a Lobaugh BB gearbox to me.

Slight differences - the worm is not cut in the shaft, the worm gear carrier is not shaped like the stamped Lobaugh, and the worm housing ends are more robust.

Don't forget - Gerry worked for Lobaugh in the early 1940s.  I got to visit his shop!

I bought a locomotive from Rod Miller, and he confirmed the gearbox was one Jerry White made. He spent a lot of time working with and learning  Jerry's methods.

Centering.  Simulates the real thing.  Works great.

Thank you for your insight .. interesting photo of the Jerry White drive ... I'll post a photo of the engine he made in the 30's before heading to CA and Lobaugh ....

Not sure you can buy them new, but they appear often in junk boxes.  Very popular in older O Scale.
