The latest issue of The Keystone [vol.45, No.3] has a 29 page article on the S2 Turbine, plus a full set of inserted drawings.

 

The advantges of  steam turbine that was sought with the S2 design were higher efficiency, greater hauling capacity and improved operational chracteristics.

 

The S2 was designed to haul a 16 car passenger train on favorable terrain.

during one of the tests March 30, 1945, a 16 car train was extended to speeds over 100 mph for 27 miles, with a maximum speed of 107 mph and a minimum of 101 mph., averaging 104.5 mph over the distance. The maximum drawbar pull was 74,000 lbs, and 4050 at 100 mph.
