I am making sure I understand DCS and conventional running. I have a ps-1 engine and only way to make it run correctly is push the ps-1 button on the dcd remote correct?

now if I wanted to run postwar lionel conventional can the dcs remote and tiu perform this task or is this a transformer handle only to run the postwar locomotives.

I know why am I running conventional well sometimes I like to just listen to an old postwar do its thing and enjoy the memories.

thanks in advance for help understanding this.

Soo, ps-1 engines will always run in variable/conventional mode...and while you can remotely control the sounds from a handheld DCS remote, the speed is still varialbe voltage{via DCS remote or any stationary transformer}.

Ps2 and 3 run in full DCS mode which is a constant full voltage on the rails....commands are sent via the rails to the engines thru electronic waves or pulses...setting a conventional/ps1 engine on "command" powered rails will make her take off like a rocket{full power}.

I happen to have 5 ps1 engines, as many true conventionals, and power all mine thru my old ZW and/or my DCS remote...I happen to have old CAB1 in the possibility that I might own a TMCC engine some day.

Sorry Dlo, I got to this party late or I would've chimed in on your thread too....it seems to be well answered already though.

Oh, so true!! I finally found a forum member who experienced the same situation as I did.

so, the only way to do "both" is to purchase a z-4000 and a DCS remote integrated with a TIU, correct?!?

I understand the ps-1 approach and thanks for all replys on that part.

my other issue is with lionel postwar conventional locomotives seems I have tried before to use the remote to run them and either I am doing something wrong setting up the variable voltage or they only will run off the transformer handles like in the pre command days?

if nothing else I will wire in my other 2 tpc's I have and use a toggle switch to power them instead of the tiu.

Not to state the obvious, however, you do know that you must have full power into a variable channel before you can control it with the DCS Remote, correct?

Guilty....I was trying to use the command outputs to control my ps1s before I got to the board here and asked...hindsite is always 20/20, ain't it...oops.

...and yes, you will need either a transformer or power supply for input and the TIU and remote...not sure what the origonal non-remote box command version requires off hand.

True, but I have ran down to 15-16v for input when using my old ZW...now I use a 16v 2 amp power supply that I got at a surplus store.

As Barry said, you have to have full power as input and the TIU will control it up or down...just input power to either conventional{varied} or command{full constant voltage output} and use the "same type of output as put in"{command or conventional}.
