I have locomotive 20-3056 SF Texas 2-10-4 loco that has PS2 5V electronics. Since buying it used 6 months ago, it has worked fine in DCS except that the headlights dim noticeably when smoke is turned on. I traced the issue, not surprisingly, to the heater unit, rather than the fan, and measured the resistance of the parallel-mounted heating coils to be around 8 ohms. This seems about right since a single coil spare that I have measured 16 ohms. Any suggestions? Given the issues getting repair parts on 5V electronics, I am hesitant to continue to run the loco with the smoke on in case this is an overload issue that will eventually burn something out.

I have other steam locos of this vintage ( 5V PS2) that don’t have this issue.

Be sure heater and fan are isolated from ground.

Unplug fan and test again.  If motor is drawing high current, it can cause these problems.

Check solder connections at 10 pin socket in loco.  A bad ground connection can have a higher voltage drop when the smoke is turned on.

if flicker is a problem and it uses MUX boards, there are fixes for that will be addressed later (more involved).

There is a known issue with PS/2 steam with the 5V board and mux boards, there's a fairly involved four step procedure for correcting it.  Sometimes it just requires a fairly simple fix, other times you end up modifying surface mount components on the boards.

FWIW, I've had several engines that just the first step resolved the issue.  However, I've also had to do the whole shooting match at times to fix it.

Here's the procedure for fixing it.

Thanks to all of you who responded so quickly and with helpful information. And especially to gunrunnerjohn, who once again shows his technical depth and the extent of his willingness to provide valuable support. The repair document is remarkably professional, thorough, and easy to follow. I sense a Digi-Key order is in my near future I think I can do all four steps but will go step by step as instructed.

I finally was able to implement step 1 of the fix (the rewiring) and it took care of the issue. Thanks for the great help on this.

I was delayed because in the process of changing the wiring, I broke the pins off the 3 terminal voltage regulator in the socket and had to order a replacement. I am proceeding with the same fix on another loco of the same vintage that has a similar problem.

Regards,

Walter
