I read Scott's post about his SW 1500 PS 2 engine not working and just giving off an audible buzz. I too have the same issue and I'm not sure if I saw the fix for Scott's engine in the other post (sorry if I overlooked it). I recently bought this engine and the previous owner just installed a radio shack rechargable battery. The engine did work after I first bought it and I did charge the battery with a MTH charger. I was going to take out the radio shack battery and put in a BCR, but I'm not sure how to remove the PS 2 board, it seems pretty tight and I did not want to damage it. I am new to this forum and have just entered into the world of DSC. Right now I am using a Remote Commander, but I am planning to build a new layout and put in a DSC system soon. I also tried the engine in conventional control and got the same audible buzz. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. Alan

Alan, You have the older PS-2 5V board (obsolete). Are there any sounds at all? Bell/Whistle, diesel or steam sounds, or just a static buzz like a short? Does the engine run otherwise?
You can check the speaker, they were susceptible to metal/magnet flaking and that might cause poor sounds or even no sounds if the speaker died. The other issue could be a blown audio amp. Scott's issue is a short on the board and the sizzle of a short on a component.
If your not comfortable with the disassembly I can do it. If you test your speaker and it is good, the board needs to be tested/repaired. My e-mail is in my profile. G
Thanks for the reply. Just the faint static buzz. No bell, whistle or sound and the engine does not run at all in conventional or command. The battery does register 9 volts on my DMM, but I want to confirm that it will load test. Does this mean the PS2 board (the board on top above the battery, from what I see in the owners manual) is bad? I'm not afraid to pul the board out, I just want to be sure that it pulls straight up or if you have any tips on removal. Is there anything I can repair with limited knowledge?
I would not power this up any more. You could get lucky and the audio amp is shorted and once remove the board comes back to responding with out audio. At that point we can replace the audio amp and see if we restore it.
It also can be shorted and not repairable. It can happen to PS-2 5V. None of this is easy for non technical folks.
To get the board out you will find some screws holding an aluminum bracket that the board is screwed into. That allows the board to come up other then harness wiring. There also is a thick 3 wire harness with large white plug that goes into a Voltage regulator screwed to the frame. That needs to be unplugged.
I don't think your battery is the issue though. It was working then just stopped correct? Can you post a picture? G
Some engine it's easier to take the speaker off to change a battery rather than attempting to remove the board, Go at it from the bottom , turn the engine upside down..... I'm don't know about this engine
Alan, Up near the front at the motor but under the board you should see 2 screws holding an aluminum bracket that is attached to the board. They need to be removed to lift board up.
Disconnect harnesses from board and you have to unplug the Black/Red Yel thick 3 wire harness from the regulator mounted on the chassis frame. G
George,
I worked way to late today - I will get that board out ASAP. Thanks for your posts.
