I have a 9V ps1 system with a dead battery. I have a 9V(8.4V) rechargablebattery on hand but this battery only has a charge of 5.5V. Is this too low to place in the system? Do I need a new battery? Thank yo for your help.

It is too low. Replace the battery with a BCR device. Please use the "SEARCH" button in the upper right of this page and enter BCR. You'll find lots of information on where to order one and the advantages compared to using a battery for the PS1
Where do you find a 9V BCR for sale? I see 3V for PS2 but no 9V.
@AZ TIN, the nice folks @ J&W Electronics in York, PA will help you out. 717-417-2820. (they make the BCR’s). Good luck with your engine revival ! Rich
Once bcr is installed, bring the voltage up to 10v slowly, allow the bcr to charge for several minutes, then use throttle to engage forward. When loco moves, bingo.
