So the other day I followed the steps to charge and run my Protosound 1 Southern F3 ABA.  Tonight I had it going around the track.  Shut it off and now when I power it back on (this was over an hour ago that it was running and when it shut off I heard the boards shut down.) It powers up and makes two clings buy will not move.  If I shut down I get a ding and if I hit the whistle I get a ding.

What does this mean and what do I, or can I even do?

Can you do a #18 reset with just a TIU (and the DCS remote of course?)

It shouldn't matter now though, I let it sit at 14V like GunrunnerJohn told me to then shut down and powered back up, it works.

So did the little bit that I ran it today (maybe 5 minutes) kill the battery that quickly?  If so, I'm assuming I should replace with a BCR, I have no idea how to do that, although I know I'm capable.

To replace with a BCR, what do I need and what do I need to do?

Thanks!

Put in a BCR even after you check out the engine with a regular alkaline battery. Once the BCR is installed, all you need to do each time you start up that engine is voltage set around 10 or 11 volts for about 30 seconds to charge up the BCR. Once that is done, throttle up and increase the voltage to get your train moving.

I have put BCR'S in every proto 1 or 2 engine and never had an issue since.

PS-! locos would be better off with BCR's. I learned the hard way. If you have a number of engines which sit around too long before using them plop a BCR in. To me it takes too long to charge the battery and eventually you will have to replace that battery anyways. Sometimes it is a pain to open up those engines. I have been replacing all the batteries in my PS1's before I even try to run them............Paul

Mike,

I still being new to MTH battery issues, I got a PS1 engine from a guy free of charge, who was just sick of fooling with the engine.  I was able to get it going again with a BCR.  I gave the fellow 2 or 3 freight cars in return when he had bought a similar Williams engine I believe it was, to replace the one he gave me.

Later I saw one for sale here that a forum member was selling cheap with similar problems.  I took a chance, bought it, put in a BCR, and was able to get it going.

Moral of the stories.  Nothing great on my part, if I could do it, you shouldn't have any problem either.  If you do have problems, someone here will hit on the right answer.

Glad to see you getting out your trains after you hiatus of home improvement projects!!

Hello guys and gals........

I have a Railking PS-1 NW-2 switcher that and purchased the BCR for it.  It was my first BCR and detective had to return it for exchange then install it 6 months ago, no trouble at all.  Just let it charge at 10 volts for a minute then off you go. Installing the BCR in the NW-2 was very easy (BCR goes in the fuel tank and takes 3 screws to remove the fuel tank from outside). It is a great little engine !!!
