I have two PS2 engines, neither are working well.  Hoping I may get one out of the two.  The scenario is one engine is the Daylight 4449 GS-4 4-8-4, (30-4071-1), from the 2002 Toy Fair flyer.  I was  running this engine at our train club, unfortunately it derailed.  And I saw a "blue" cloud of smoke.  Every since then it just sets on the track and looks pretty.

The second engine belongs to a friend of mine, and it is a CSX 1500 Switcher, # 1311. (30-2259-1).  The engine and all features are working well.  The problem is the sound quality.  The sound is extremely distorted.

What I'm considering is the possibility of removing the sound board from the Daylight and exchanging it in the CSX engine.  According the MTH documents both engines use the same sound board set.  (AE-0000001).

My assumption is that the sound board is a "daughter" board and that I could simply unplug it and replace it.  (Of course I would have to download a new sound file after the exchange.)

Is my assumption reasonable, and I am hoping the problem with the daylight was confined to the main board and did not affect the sound board in it.

Or should I just bite the bullet and seek some professional help?  The only issue with that is the board set is more valuable than the engine.

Thanks for any thoughts!!

The benefits of this forum is awesome!  Been playing with trains since the 60's, couldn't even imagine trying to operate todays equipment with the support system we had at that time.  Literally none.  As a result of the inquiry here, I took advantage of "GGG's" offer and sent not just one but 3 engines to him.  He took care of all the issues I had, and was extremely reasonable on the price.  (Much better than I would have gotten at any repair center, I'm sure!)  And, speak about quick, he didn't have them for more than a week!  So hats of to you George!  I really appreciate your help!!!

Don,  Chances are the Switcher speaker is bad causing distortion.  SO I would load daylight sound file and do the swap.  Once in the daylight see if sounds improve.  The 16ohm speakers had some issues with the metal around the magnet flaking off and collecting around the magnet coil and distorting the sound reproduction.

If not the speaker, may be a bad audio amp.  G

Any speaker will work, but 5V boards need 16ohm and 3V and PS-3 use 4 ohm.  Normally 50mm dia and 17mm height.  But depending on engine smaller dia also and you need to make sure of height and magnet size as some speakers come through a small dia hole in the frame.  So you need to take the measurements, of Dia and Height and make sure it will fit for the specific engine.  G

Marty, I assume your question regarding the transformers were for me.  The only engine that was actually run on the "club's" layout was the Daylight, and that is the one that had the "blue smoke".  The transformers were the z4000's,  you've actually been to the club.  I am not a participating member there any more but have no negative feelings for the club or any of its members.  I just didn't have any time and travel was an issue.

Actually, turned the engines over to one of the guys on the forum for evaluation and repair.
